Sarah Beaney Cup - North Qualifier Garioch RFC, Inverurie - Saturday, 9 September 2017 On Saturday the 9th of September the Orkney Rugby Women travelled down to Garioch rugby club to play in their qualifying tournament for the Sarah Beaney cup (women's Scottish cup). This day was for all the teams in the women's north league to compete against each other for one to go through to the first round of the cup. Shetland couldn't make it down due to travel issues, so it was down to Inverness Craig Dunain, Banff and Orkney to compete for that vital top spot. BT National League Division 3
Countesswells, Aberdeen - Saturday, 9 September 2017 GORDONIANS RFC 63, ORKNEY RFC 13 The score flatters Gordonians, Orkney started brightly again scoring the first try by Eoin Donaldson, taken high around the neck on the left flank, referee awarded penalty try so 7 zip to Orkney. Yellow card to Gordonians. Gordonians struck back straight away and their 10 had an amazing day of kicking - he didn't miss much. Half time score was 21-13 to Gordonians. Graham poke slotted 2 penalties - that was end of Orkney scores. Due once again to the lack of numbers, Orkney struggled to keep up against a full Gordonians side. I give a huge pat on the back and have the utmost respect for the 15 guys who travelled South again and to the 2 boys who came from Aberdeenshire to help us out. Training Tues at the Club 5:45 for 6:00pm start, so please be sharp. P.L. *** UPDATE Sat 9th September*** The ladies have qualified for the Sarah Beaney Cup, beating both Inverness Craig Dunain and Banff today, while the men lost out 63-13 to Gordonians. Tomorrow (Sunday 10th) sees the U18s taking on Madras at Picky with a 12 noon kick-off- so if you're suffering rugby withdrawal, why not go along and get behind the boys. The National 3 match between Gordonians & Orkney at Countesswells tomorrow will kick off at the slightly later time of 1pm and not 12:30 as previously advertised - please spread the word .
And if you are in the area why not go along and cheer the boys along, or take a trip to Inverurie and show your support for the women as they play two cup qualifiers at Garioch RFC from 11am - it is always gratefully appreciated. On Saturday 16th September at 12 noon we will be having a veterans game of rugby and a raffle to raise money for the McPherson family.
Crag McPherson is an ex-1st XV rugby player, playing both at scrum half and centre for the club. He started his rugby career at Lochaber and then moved to Orkney, where he played for the club in the North District league, Brin Cup, Scottish Cup and National Seven league. A multi talented sportsman, he also represented the club at football and darts. Craig was legendary on club tours and loved his rugby. Unfortunately a neck injury ended his rugby and football career. Craig is now fighting a very serious illness and we as friends,ex team mates and a club would like to help him and his family by raising as much money as possible to help them through this difficult time. We hope that all veteran players, particularly those who played with Craig, could meet at ORFC Clubrooms at 11:00 when sides will be picked and format will be arranged. A donation to the fund will be required to participate and the Club will be running a fundraising raffle on the day. Could anybody interested please give their names to club VP, Garry Coltherd (077453 31178) or Secretary, Kevin Sutherland (07879 803945) beforehand so we can have an idea of numbers. Players / members who are unable to attend on the day can donate on www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/traceys-stanger, where more info can also be found.

Pickaquoy Infield - Saturday, 2 September 2017 ORKNEY RFC 15, HIGHLAND 31 Orkney RFC opened their first home National 3 match for 2017/18 fairly well. Despite the score 31-15 to Highland the young guard put up a good account of themselves. With the inclusion of a couple of the older heads put stability & a bit of ruggedness into the Orkney play. |
